Fred Thompson Gets Big Bounce in South Carolina
Posted on January 14, 2008
He shall be called the slayer of the Huckaboom!
Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolina’s Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee.
The big winner from that trade-off is John McCain.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 28%, Huckabee at 19%, Mitt Romney at 17%, and Fred Thompson at 16%. Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul are tied with 5% support. Giuliani is betting his entire campaign on a strong showing in Florida, where he is now tied for the lead with three others.
A few notes on this. Factoring in the margin of error it is a virtual tie for second, especially since Mitt has pulled ads in SC and the trend is clear on where momentum is. Furthermore, he is almost at the one million mark on fundraising, and has a new ad playing all over the state.
However, McCain remains at the top, and being a friend, Fred seems reluctant to attack him. Accusations of him being a stalking horse for McCain are getting on my nerves, but if he doesn’t get more aggressive in letting South Carolina know why he is better than McCain, this may end up his stumbling block.
However, my friend Rick Moran sees it like this:
There has been much talk about Thompson going easy on McCain in the debate and in TV appearances since then. Yesterday on CNN’s Late Edition, Fred barely laid a glove on McCain. This has led to some spurious rumors that Thompson is a stalking horse for McCain and will drop out after South Carolina and endorse the Arizonian, being rewarded with the Vice Presidential nomination later.
That’s not quite how I see it.
It makes sense for Fred to lay off McCain until after Michigan. If his friend can knock off Romney in the state of his birth, even Daddy Warbucks would have to concede his candidacy is virtually finished. After Michigan, Fred would be free to go after McCain’s immigration record – a very easy task and one that would resonate powerfully with South Carolina voters.
Even if he doesn’t go after McCain, Romney might do it for him, seeing a Thompson win as the only way he stays viable into Florida.
Meanwhile Fred’s new ad is playing all over South Carolina.

Go Fred!
This is only the beginning. Let’s make the mainstream media eat their lunch and WIN South Carolina! It can be done. Let’s boot that communist Mike Huckabee out of the race.
I must admit I’m divided on South Carolina. A Mitt loss throws his supporters our way. But a McCain loss weakens him even more and allows Fred to fill the void.
Either way, we must win the battle in South Carolina! First step in winning the war to take back our party from the left!
Go Fred! I am so excited that he has stepped up the pace!!!! Is there anything that I can do fromhere in FL to help? Can I make phone calls to people in S.C. urging them to go vote? to get to the polls and vote for Fred. I am just so happy that the momentum is moving in the right direction, bec. you don’t hear anything on the media (Fox). And Rick Moran’s view on the “hands off McCain - for now ” approach is logical. Just so happy, Go Fred!!!!/bev in Miami
Of course you can help Bev! Just go on over to Fred08.com and you will see plenty of ways. Folks at the Fred File there will make great friends with you.
I’ve been calling from Florida to voters in S.C. thru the Fred08 site and my friend has called over 400 people. The response is getting better and better each day. We need all the help we can get helping the momentum grow. President Fred Dalton Thompson !!! sounds good doesn’t it
No one including the media is attacking McCaine. It seems he like Obama is the preferred front runner.
Thanks for the direction. I just volunteered on Fred08.com to do phone calls, and hope they send me names to call. I have free long distance, though my cell phone provider was not one of the ones listed. But can someone tell me why is the main stream media so averse to Thompson. Fox news, which I watch, doesn’t give him much coverage/ What’s with that?/bev
Thanks everyone for the directions. I volunteered to make phone calls for Fred. He must do well in SC!!!!/bev
Wow! Can’t believe it, but Hannity and Colmes on Fox are starting to talk about a Fred Thompson surge. They actually spent a few minutes discussing w/ their panel did they think he had the possibility to do well in SC!!!!!!!!!! (Things are looking up folks!!!!)//bev in MIami
