Judge Robert Bork Endorses Romney
Posted on December 15, 2007
Judge Robert Bork, the conservative judge infamous for being denied a spot on the Supreme Court through a witch hunt led by the ACLU, has given his endorsement for Mitt Romney. This is a very impressive endorsement to recieve. Here is a bit of what Judge Bork had to say:
Joining Romney for President, Judge Bork said, “Throughout my career, I have had the honor of serving under several Presidents and am proud to make today’s endorsement. No other candidate will do more to advance the conservative judicial movement than Governor Mitt Romney. He knows firsthand how the judicial branch can profoundly affect the future course of a state and a nation. I greatly admired his leadership in Massachusetts in the way that he responded to the activist court’s ruling legalizing same-sex ‘marriage.’ His leadership on the issue has served as a model to the nation on how to respect all of our citizens while respecting the rule of law at the same time.”
Judge Bork continued, “Our next President may be called upon to make more than one Supreme Court nomination, and Governor Romney is committed to nominating judges who take their oath of office seriously and respect the rule of law in our nation. I also support Governor Romney because of his character, his integrity and his stands on the major issues facing the United States.”
Next to the war on terror, the conservative judicial movement is one of my personal high priorities. There is no doubt that groups like the ACLU have used liberal leaning courts to achieve their agenda. One of the best ways to stop their agenda is the appointment of conservative judges. I’m not pulling my support for Thompson, but it does put an impressive mark on the board for Romney. I have disagreements in details with some of Bork’s philosophies on the Constitution, but overall my respect remains. I have confidence that Fred would do well for the conservative judicial movement as well. Despite Bork’s endorsement, I still find several things about Romney uncomfortable, especially in his shifted positions on other important issues. The endorsement is impressive, but not enough to convert me right now.
So…I’m still supporting Fred Thompson, but this endorsement goes a good way in easing some of my discomfort with Romney. That may be needed down the road, because the National Review endorsement did nothing for me.
Obviously, no one will get the Ronald Reagan or Barry Goldwater endorsement in this cycle unless Shirley MacLaine agrees to channel them. A Robert Bork endorsement may be as close as anyone gets in 2008’s primaries.
As much as conservatives respect Judge Bork, his endorsement is less significant as guidance for undecided conservatives than as evidence of how undecided (non-evangelical) conservatives are likely to break.
I am not sure what the effect of this will be, but it does make the case that Romney is the conservative choice for those who want to avoid Huckacide. It’s time to get over your misgivings of his flip flops and get on the train folks.
Sorry Jason, but at this point in time, I’m not ready to get over his flip flops. However, I will admit…this is the first endorsement since the National Right to Life Committe endorse Thompson that carries much weight. Of course Jesus endorses Huckabee, so…
Hmmm…is this a RINO endorsing a RINO?
Glenn Reynolds is not impressed.
That’s a big deal …………… huge. Means a lot to me.
It may be cliche, but an enemy of Teddy Kennedy and the ultra-leftist forces in the Senate is a friend of mine. No one is as hated amongst the liberals on the Senate Judiciary Committee as Judge Robert Bork. Bork was one of the most qualified nominees to the Supreme Court ever, and was only defeated because of a media blitz steeped in lies. Bork endorsing Romney is a plus for Mitt in my book.
Justin makes a great point. Anyone the ACLU hates has my respect as well. This endorsement is a pretty big deal with the judicious minded conservatives like myself. It isn’t enough to convert me yet, but like I said before…it makes me a little less uncomfortable about Mitt.
At the same time, I tend to lean more with MacRanger:
The endorsement of Conserva-lite Mitt Romney by The National Review and now by Judge Robert Bork is, in my view very indicative of how lost our identity as conservatives has become. In fact I’ll go as far as calling it a cop out. The National Review may have been started by a true conservative, but it’s apparent that the “Rockefellers†are in charge now - a fact I’ve noted for some time now.
Again, remember that it was in 1976 that conservatives attempted to pull a coup at the GOP convention, by trying to nominate Ronald Reagan but lost and we got Gerald Ford, our last RINO President instead. The result of course was a loss to the worst President of recent history - perhaps in history - Jimmy Carter. We compromised and lost the White House in the process.
Yet true conservatives didn’t give up and in 1980 we finally got our guy through.
Now again we have a conservative scramble of sorts for we have not one but two Gerald Fords in at the top of the charts, and an even worse in a surging Mike Huckabee.

I agree, National Review’s endorsement of Romney did nothing for me either. But it is much harder to dismiss Judge Bork who I much respect and certainly not someone that jumps on bandwagons.
I didn’t know about this - but, Wow!
Like you I am sticking with Fred Thompson. I think the title
“consistent conservative” is used properly in describing Fred. It seems to me that
Romney has come to some of his positions much later on, leaving me wondering just how
committed he is to those positions. After all, what goes on in the mind of a religous
person who for years supported abortion, and only recently decided to opposes it?
What other peculiar residue is left in that head? I am very concerned about Huckabee
for a number of reasons and evangelical Christians (I am one) need to recognize
that it was our ranks that made Jimmy Carter possible. I fear that Huckabee may
be the same thing only different.
