Thompson Gains National Right to Life Endorsement?

Posted on November 12, 2007

I put the question mark only because it isn’t official yet. However, this is what the rumor is, and what sources are telling FOX. This weekend, rumors were saying that their endorsement would be going to Huckabee as well. This will be a big endorsement for Fred Thompson to gain. Critics are probably curious since NRLC likes the Human Life Amendment while Fred spoke out against it on the basis of his Federalist principles. However, it makes alot of sense to me based on the fact of Fred’s 100% pro-life record that he has touted many times.

Bryan Preston is on the same page:

On the other hand, Thompson does have a 100% pro-life voting record as a senator. While his language about not wanting to criminalize young girls and mothers could be mistaken for NARAL rhetoric, Thompson’s voting record is solid. Picking up the NRLC endorsement probably turns the Robertson endorsement of Giuliani into a wash, which in turn means that we’re looking at a very divided social con base in the GOP.

American Pundit notes the divide as well:

Here’s what’s most interesting: Major players in the social conservative movement are all split, supporting different candidates. Just in the last week we’ve seen Pat Robertson go to Rudy and now NRLC go to Fred.

Being pro-life is an important factor to me in who I will vote for, however…just like I said on Rudy’s endorsement from Robertson…endorsements don’t mean much to me. Still, if the rumor turns out true, it changes the dynamic of the race once again. Its gonna be an unpredictable voting season this year, in my opinion.

Sister Toldjah:

In other words, nothing has changed, and it’s still anybody’s guess as to who the the top guy is going to be going into the primaries.

Michelle Malkin has the NRLC flyer on the candidates’ positions on life and a poll on what you think.

Politico:

Still, in the hotly contested effort to court the fragmented social conservative base, the validation by this group represents a coup for Thompson.

Captain Ed finds it peculiar:

The NRLC endorsement of Thompson makes some sense. After all, Thompson does have a strong pro-life voting record — but then again, so do Mike Huckabee and Duncan Hunter. Has either come out in opposition to the Right to Life amendment? I don’t believe so — and since that has been one of the primary goals of the NRLC, endorsing a candidate who opposes them on that question seems more than a little peculiar.

Well, I can make a pretty good guess on answering Ed’s question. They are probably thinking ahead, and Huckabee and Hunter don’t have as much of a chance getting the nomination to beat Hillary. We might as well ask the same question of Ron Paul. Why didn’t they pick him, his record is all pro-life as well. If we take a look at the three with the most likely chances; Rudy, Mitt, and Fred…there choice becomes much less suprising and more realistic.

Most entertaining are the jaws dropping at NRO

You know Jay. Thompson was a Lobbyist for a Pro-choice group.

Still wondering why they aren’t supporting Dr. Paul. Being that he is a OB/GY,delivered some 4,000 children. ANNNND has a 100% Pro-Life voting record.

    Just sayin….

Thompson gets the backing of the NRLC just a day after he says he could not support the Anti-abortion plank in the Republican Party platform.
Robert Novak was astounded by his “insensitivities” to abortion opponents. What will Novak think of the NRLC?
What will other rank and file conservative abortion opponents think of the NRLC?

So if Congress were to vote on the human right amendment when Thomson was a Senator he would not have 100% human right voting record. You could almost me pro-choice to murder defenseless baby and still have a 100% pro-life record by those standards. Romney has a better stance. I am just not sure I can trust him. Hunter, Keyes, Tancredo, and even Huckabee would be better choices from what I have heard. At least Thompson is not as bad a choice as Giuliani.

We have a snowballs chance in hell of passing a constituitional amendment. We need judges to overturn Roe. Then a state by state effort to ban abortion. Thompson is on board with this.

Better get behind Thompson or an abortionist will gat the nod.
