Drudge: ISRAEL PLANS NUCLEAR STRIKE ON IRAN

Posted on January 6, 2007

Update: Israel denies the entire story. Captain’s Quarters concludes that this was all likely just a training exercise.
Update: I told you there would be an if: Here is the full story.

ISRAEL has drawn up secret plans to destroy Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities with tactical nuclear weapons.
Two Israeli air force squadrons are training to blow up an Iranian facility using low-yield nuclear “bunker-busters”, according to several Israeli military sources.

The attack would be the first with nuclear weapons since 1945, when the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Israeli weapons would each have a force equivalent to one-fifteenth of the Hiroshima bomb.

Under the plans, conventional laser-guided bombs would open “tunnels” into the targets. “Mini-nukes” would then immediately be fired into a plant at Natanz, exploding deep underground to reduce the risk of radioactive fallout.

“As soon as the green light is given, it will be one mission, one strike and the Iranian nuclear project will be demolished,” said one of the sources.

Here is the “if”.

However, the nuclear-tipped bunker-busters would be used only if a conventional attack was ruled out and if the United States declined to intervene, senior sources said.

Drudge has it in big red headlines, but I’m not swallowing whole. There will probably be a huge “if” that follows. Probably something like…IF all diplomacy fails. This is what is fun about blogs…watching the reactions to headlines when we don’t have the full story yet.

Israel has drawn up secret plans to destroy Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities with tactical nuclear weapons, the SUNDAY TIMES of London is planning to report, British media sources tell DRUDGE… MORE…

No other information yet…but I will update as it comes in. I’m thinking this is going to be one of those times where the Drudge teaser headlines are more alarming than the actual story. Its probably a contingency plan for ‘just in case’ situations that has been leaked.

I’m with John Little

A conventional attack would seem much more likely. I’m starting to think 2007 may be there year. But nuclear? That event would be so disruptive worldwide that I just can’t imagine it being used. I’m inclined to view this as both a warning for Iran and an attempt to scare Washington into taking more direct action on the issue.

Charles at Little Green Footballs is on the same page as well.

I should hope so. But the Times has been wrong before with “secret Israeli plan” stories.

Others: Wizbang

Flap gets a little gung-ho!

Well, there have been signs of preparation and the rhetoric from Iran has certainly been ominous and begging for silencing.

Will the United States aid Israel?

You betcha………

Ed Driscoll wonders how much the Iranians learned from Israel’s attack on Iraq’s nuclear facilities in 81:

I can’t seem to find a link to it, but I know I’ve read or heard others discuss the demassified nature of Iran’s nuclear program, to prevent anything short of massive WWII-style bombing to dismantle the program via the air. But still, I can’t fault the Israelis for trying, since we appear to be either engaged in incredible Cold War-style subterfuge to silently defuse the situation, or, more likely, fumbling the ball.

Ace is on the same page with me too:

There are “plans,” somewhere, for the US to invade Britain, if necessary. Doesn’t mean such an invasion is actually planned.

But it does seem to be some nuclear saber-rattling. But mostly aimed at the West — i.e., America, Britain, Europe, get serious about this before our hand is forced and we do something very provocative indeed.

Saber-rattling…most likely at this point, but Kim Preistap digs up this tid-bit from The Spectator:

Within the next 12 months, the Americans or the Israelis, possibly both, are likely to launch military strikes aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Those strikes may come sooner rather than later. And they will probably be nuclear.

This makes for adding something interesting to speculation as well:

WORD that Adm. William Fallon will move laterally from our Pacific Command to take charge of Central Command - responsible for the Middle East - while two ground wars rage in the region baffled the media.

Why put a swabbie in charge of grunt operations?

There’s a one-word answer: Iran.

ASSIGNING a Navy avia tor and combat veteran to oversee our military operations in the Persian Gulf makes perfect sense when seen as a preparatory step for striking Iran’s nuclear-weapons facilities - if that becomes necessary.

JCB has a very interesting perspective in another thread here.

Macsmind:

So this rumor has been floating since last year, but the veracity of whether or not Israel would actually take the shot is without question. Israel simply cannot allow Iran to have any type of Nuclear Program - ever. The fact is that somebody has to put a stop to Iran’s build up and if we are losing our “will to win”, then it’s a good thing someone still has some cajones.

John Donovan:

Of course, if it’s a sanctioned leak - then the target isn’t Iran. It’s us. To keep the West focused on the threat - and what Israel may choose to do about it - without our permission (which they don’t need) or agreement (which they would like to have). And the plan may only contain data they want to share with us, anyway.

Lots of interesting info at Atlas Shrugs
It Shines For All Outlines why they think there will be an attack on Iran.

Hot Air:

Partly because of the taboo on nukes, partly because the Times has been alarmist in this vein before, but mostly because Israel risks total isolation and regional war if it follows through, I’m skeptical. But … what’s the alternative? To wait and hope that the UN’s weak-tea sanctions cripple the regime before it gets the bomb? The lesson here is, if your leader talks like Hitler, don’t be surprised if he’s treated like Hitler. Especially by the neighborhood Jews.

More reactions developing…

Israel really has little choice because the other Islamic nations are clamoring for nukes too.Its time to put a stop to this madness now or we will pay dearly later.

  11. Clay on January 6th, 2007 9:31 pm

If Iran should nuke Israel, the only benefit for us would be Iran turned into a sea of glass.
Not a bad idea. After all, the Persian Empire has long been dead. Iran is just nothing more
than a new NAZI like regime. And as the history of the mid 20th Century has taught us, NAZI
like governments are something we can definately afford to live without.

Put a stop to what? Do you think attacking their soil will decrease their desire to be as armed as possible?? Sure, it’ll buy some time, but it won’t stop a thing.

I read the two together (attacking with nuclear weapons and “only if stipulations as being a rather obvious attempt to force a US attack on Iran. Good luck with that. I’ll cheer for Israel all the way, but will not support the sacrifice of American lives in place of Israeli.

Clay, I say things for a reason and I omit things for a reason. I would appreciate it if you would stop pretending I’ve said things that I haven’t.

I made one assertion: Launching a missile strike at a country with nuclear ambitions is significantly more likely to increase their ambitions rather than decrease them.

I am not surprised. The problem with nuclear weapons is that he who strikes first can also be he who strikes last, so the willingness to make a preemptive strike is almost a must if you are not self destructive. This tends to lead to nuclear war in those cases one of the parties is perceived to be irrational. Enter Iran and their President who at best sounds irrational.
