NY Times Runs Front Page Story On Iraq Nuke Research

Posted on November 2, 2006

Update: See the newer thread on this for the real news and breakdown.
Update:Here it is folks!

Among the dozens of documents in English were Iraqi reports written in the 1990’s and in 2002 for United Nations inspectors in charge of making sure Iraq abandoned its unconventional arms programs after the Persian Gulf war. Experts say that at the time, Mr. Hussein’s scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away.

Wow! Sounds to me like we took the guy out in good time.

Developing…up at Drudge now..November Surprise?

SOURCES: NYT: U.S. POSTING OF IRAQ NUKE DOCS ON WEB COULD HAVE HELPED IRAN…
Federal government set up Web site — Operation Iraqi Freedom Document Portal — to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war; detailed accounts of Iraq’s secret nuclear research; a ‘basic guide to building an atom bomb’… Officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency fear the information could help Iran develop nuclear arms… contain charts, diagrams, equations and lengthy narratives about bomb building that the nuclear experts say go beyond what is available elsewhere on the Internet and in other public forums…. Hot Air:

On behalf of every conservative in the United States, let me ask one question:
Exactly how far along was Saddam’s nuclear research that Iran might possibly benefit from it?
Update: Okay, two questions:
Why is the IAEA worries about Iran using bombmaking information in their “peaceful nuclear energy program”?

Slublog:

Is the New York Times going to run a story that bolsters the case for taking out Saddam?

Ace:

See, we don’t have to sweat Iran enriching uranium. No sirree. Most likely that’s for peaceful energy purposes. What we have to worry about is Bush assisting Iran in building the bomb that we’re not really convinced they’re building.

Unbelievable. Supposedly Iraq has advanced nuclear research, which could be used to build a bomb, and this gets spun against Bush.

Greg Tinti:

It’ll be interesting to see what the story’s angle on this is. How long was the document available online? Is it still available online? Is there solid proof that Iran knew of the document’s existence and obtained it? Etc.

But fundamentally: doesn’t the existence of this document prove that Iraq had WMD capability–nuclear capability–and all Saddam had to do was wait out the UN sanctions and then he’d be back on his merry way to the atomic club?

“But in recent weeks, the site has posted some documents that weapons experts say are a danger themselves: detailed accounts of Iraq’s secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war.”

Right, so Iran’s 2006 nuclear program is so backwards that pre-1991 Iraq nuc research is actually beneficial to them? If you believe that, I’ve got a bridge to sell you…

“Wow! Sounds to me like we took the guy out in good time.”

The ‘time’ they’re referring to is before the gulf war. Do you understand english?
