US detects second N Korea ‘blast’

Update from Arrmatey:

Jay, it looks like something happened:

(by the way, if anyone out there knows how to read seismic information, follow this link and tell me what you think)

I’m not hearing much about this yet.

US intelligence has detected an explosion of less than one kilotonne in magnitude in North Korea but has not been able to determine whether it was nuclear or not, a senior intelligence official said.

The official, who asked not to be identified, said that first-time nuclear tests historically have been in the several kilotonne range.

“We are aware that there was a sub-kilotonne explosion in North Korea,” said the official. “We have not been able to determine at this point whether it was in fact nuclear.”

The first post is getting long and cluttered so I thought I would post a new one. Here are some other good links and reactions to N. Korea’s nuclear success.

Fausta has an excellent post on House Speaker to be Nancy Pelosi, the economy and North Korea.

Pelosi voted NO on deploying a national missile defense system, even in the face of North Korean and Iranian development of long-range missile and nuclear capabilities. She voted NO on continuing military recruitment on college campuses, even though this would upgrade the quality and breadth of our military forces.

Bryan Preston has fun photoshopping Kim Jong Il.
Harry Reid weighs in to blame Bush:

I urge the President to immediately appoint a senior official to conduct a full review of his Administration’s failed North Korea policy, develop recommendations to change course, and directly communicate to the North Koreans the consequences of their actions and the Administration’s new course. On North Korea as in other national security policies, the Bush Administration and the Republican-controlled Congress have made America less secure. It is time for a new direction.

Was it a dud?

Is there anything Harry Reid will not blame Bush for?

Don’t worry, the UN Security council is going to meet and say nasty things. They might even pass a dreaded “resolution.”
