U.S. Tipping Mexico to Minuteman Patrols

Posted on May 9, 2006

Update: Euphoric Reality gets a email press release from Tom Tancredo decrying the practice.

Its not enough that our government is doing next to nothing about our border problem…now we learn from the Daily Bulletin that our U.S. Border Patrol is tipping off Mexican authorities to the whereabouts of our citizens that are doing the job our government should be doing, the Minutemen. Hat tip: Michelle Malkin

While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen — and telling the Mexican government where they are.
According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants — and if and when violence is used against border crossers.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants’ rights are being observed.

“It’s not a secret where the Minuteman volunteers are going to be,” Mario Martinez said Monday.

“This … simply makes two basic statements — that we will not allow any lawlessness of any type, and that if an alien is encountered by a Minuteman or arrested by the Minuteman, then we will allow that government to interview the person.”

Minuteman members were not so sanguine about the arrangement, however, saying that reporting their location to Mexican officials nullifies their effectiveness along the border and could endanger their lives.

“Now we know why it seemed like Mexican officials knew where we were all the time,” said Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. “It’s unbelievable that our own government agency is sending intelligence to another country. They are sending intelligence to a nation where corruption runs rampant, and that could be getting into the hands of criminal cartels.

“They just basically endangered the lives of American people.”

Officials with the Mexican consulate in Washington, D.C., could not be reached for comment Monday.

And to raise your blood pressure up another notch, they are being told to ignore reports of illegal sitings from the Minutemen!

“Last year an internal memo notified all agents not to give credit to Minuteman volunteers or others who call in sightings of illegal aliens,” said an agent who spoke to the Daily Bulletin on condition he not be identified. “We were told to list it as a citizen call and leave it at that. Many times, we were told not to go out to Minuteman calls.”

Publius Rendezvous sums up my feelings very well:

This is an indictment on our sovereignty. Further, it is an indictment illustrating the lip-service those in Washington are paying to Americans such as you and I. While we hear their sanctimonious sermons on security and how they hope to secure our borders, these acts are transpiring under our noses.

Absurd, and intolerable.

Not only absurd and intolerable, but also dangerous! Indeed this threatens our sovereignty to a great degree, however it also threatens our National security. My primary concern on this is that our resources for protecting our pourous borders are being distracted to watching American citizens instead of the job they are supposed to be doing. This only adds to the already existing problem. It is only a matter of time before someone slips a dirty bomb across, if it hasn’t already happened.

John Hawkins says almost the same thing!

For all we know, a terrorist carrying a suitcase nuke may have been allowed to walk into our country because our own government doesn’t want the Minutemen to interfere with the free flow of illegal aliens into this country.

Bryan Preston:

I’ve seen several administrations do a lot of outrageous things, but tipping a foreign government to the legal activities of American citizens just might be the most outrageous thing I’ve ever seen any American administration do.

Weapons of Mass Discussion asks the question; Whose side are these guys on anyways?

Now, that is a very good question.

Michelle Malkin notes that if the ACLU were not so busy demonizing the Minutemen, that you would think they might be on the side of law-abiding Americans being surveilled by their government. Indeed, and we’ve got plenty on the ACLU’s efforts to stop the Minutemen.

It almost seems like the stuff of fiction. A government agency shadowing the actions of American citizens and then reporting their movements and actions to a foreign government. Unfortunately, it is just another sad chapter along the U.S. - Mexican

    obsolescence

I think the above describes the border situation perfectly, so much for government by the people, for the people.

How very, very sad. This goes far beyond the Bush Administration violating the First Amendment rights of the Minutemen; it involves passing secret intelligence to the government of a hostile foreign power. (Definition of enemy: “A hostile power or force, such as a nation.”).
By invading the US twice, opposing us in WWI, WWII, with Castro, the WOT, and the recent “Day Without Gringos”, Mexico certainly fits the definition.

Collecting intelligence on a lawful group lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights and secretly passing it to the government of an enemy power?

If you want to get to the bottom of how such a thing could happen, then “follow the money” so to speak. Mexico doesn’t give a damn about its citizens, the “protect the illegal immmigrants” rationale is a cover. But on average, one pound of drugs crosses the border for each alien (1-2 million pounds a year). This is what they are protecting: safe transport of billions of dollars of narcotics into the USA. Now why would it be national policy for the US Government to avoid drug smuggling interdiction? Think fellow citizens.
