Senate Votes to End Debate on Alito Nomination
Posted on January 30, 2006
Today the ACLU urged Senate to vote no on Alito cloture vote, saying he was too far outside American mainstream. I’m sure they are broken hearted that the majority of Senators decided the ACLU’s idea of mainstream was outside of the mainstream, which makes me happy.
WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate all but guaranteed Samuel Alito’s confirmation as the nation’s 110th Supreme Court justice Monday, shutting down a last-minute attempt by liberals to block the conservative judge’s nomination with a filibuster.
Republican and Democratic senators on a 72-25 vote agreed to end their debate, setting up a Tuesday morning vote on his confirmation to replace retiring moderate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
With at least 57 votes committed to Alito — 53 Republicans and four Democrats — approval by majority vote in the 100-member Senate is now seemingly assured.
A bloc of Democrats, led by Massachusetts Sens. Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, unsuccessfully tried over the weekend and Monday to persuade other senators to use a vote-delaying filibuster to stop Alito, a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Appeals Court and a former lawyer for the Reagan administration.
“It is the only way we can stop a confirmation that we feel certain will cause irreversible damage to our country,” said Kerry, the Democrats’ 2004 presidential nominee.
The gang of 14 stepped up and spoke out against a filibuster, stating they saw no need in it, and that he deserved an up or down vote. Liberals must be heart broken that the Supreme Court will soon be more balanced towards the Constitution. What their real beef with Alito is that he will actually interpret the Constitution instead legislate from the bench. It is that simple.

Kennedy has a melt down. Ian gets it on video!
Oops, I forgot to submit to the carnival of Clueless, think I’ll link Kennedy’s meltdown to it.

Bravo for Judge Alito! Honesty, decency, character, depth of knowledge, and competence shall go with Judge Alito to the Supreme Court.
How little, by comparison, were those he left behind in the Judciary Committee. It is so good to see justice and decency win for a change. My spirits are uplifted.
I too commend the Gang of 14 for speaking out against the filibuster. Judge Alito deserves the respect of a full vote of the Senate… and his qualifications and experience deserve additional weight when they cast their vote. It’s refreshing to see that Judge Alito has maintained his dignity throughout these hearings, but I don’t think that can be said for all involved…
Thank God… In the morning it will all be over and a good man named Samuel Alito will be confirmed as the Nation’s 110th Supreme Court Justice…
YES!!!

Judge Alito has the best qualifications of any justice in 70 years. He is admired by conservatives, moderates and even some liberals and enjoys a 2 to 1 approval from the American people. That today was even an event is a shame. Confirm Judge Alito!
Well said Lawfan! The democrats threw everything they could at Judge Alito, and they lost. Judge Alito is a superb nominee and will join the SCOTUS tomorrow!
