Miers Withdraws

Posted on October 27, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) — Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to be a Supreme Court justice Thursday in the face of stiff opposition and mounting criticism about her qualifications.
President Bush said he reluctantly accepted her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down. He blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.

“It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House — disclosures that would undermine a president’s ability to receive candid counsel,” Bush said. “Harriet Miers’ decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers — and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her.”

Miers’ surprise withdrawal stunned Washington on a day when the capital was awaiting news on another front — the possible indictment of senior White House aides in the CIA leak case.

Miers told the president she was withdrawing at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. In her letter dated Thursday, Miers said she was concerned that the confirmation process “would create a burden for the White House and our staff that is not in the best interest of the country.”USA Today

The President says he will name someone else in a timely manner. In the mean time we still have O’Connor. Many were leery about this pick from the beginning, and now the President will have the chance to put someone on the Supreme Court that will not rule from the bench, and will also have the backing of the majority of the Conservative base! Many will be happy with this news. But now the question is….who will be his next pick? Who do you think he should choose? Confirm Them has an idea who. Rightwing News says happy day!!

Sad, really, that the milquetoasts in the Senate, who’ve not had the stones to stick the Dems in the eye about ideological litmus tests, just whined about it, have given in to the loony RIGHT moonbats who wanted to do the same thing with Miers.

No “sturdy conservatism of principle” in the Republican Party any more? Well, not much, it seems.

Miers was more qualified for a SCOTUS post than almost every one of her detractors are for theirs as elitist snob naysayers.

Miers wouldn’t have been my pick, but then neither will anyone Bush picks next. This is yet another sad day for any genuine conservative.

Sad, but I”m glad it’s done. I think this was coming. The Washington Post predicted it and it seemed with good reason. I do think it’s a good statement about Conservatism: we can change our minds, but when we do, it’s for the better. I’m glad the pressure on Miers caused a dialogue about qualification.

“we can change our minds, but when we do, it’s for the better.”

Be careful of what you ask for… Those who opposed this nominee and think Bush capable of being vindictive, now have to worry about Gonzales being nominated.

I personally don’t think he is vindictive, but if I did, I would be extremely worried.

  33. Julie on October 28th, 2005 5:51 pm

I’m a 57 year old woman with a Ph.D. Harriet Miers has been an affirmative-action pick from the time she was chosen as a partner in her law firm. Not a ball-buster, err, I mean, not too aggressive, not too pretty, not too smart.and most of all, not too threatening. Thank God we are past all that. Janice Rogers Brown is my pick, but I’d settle for Luttig or Miguel Estrada.

  34. Julie on October 28th, 2005 6:03 pm

PS I’m not too aggressive, not too pretty, not too smart and I’m not very threatening. I shouldn’t be on the Supreme Court either(Just in case someone thinks I’m being mean to poor Harriet…)
