Round 2 O’Connor’s Replacement.

Posted on October 3, 2005

It is official. Bush has picked Harriet Miers. The official announcement will be at 8:05, will keep you informed. She is the president’s top councel. She was previously Bush’s Deputy Chief of Staff.

Miers, a Texas native, studied at Southern Methodist University, where she earned undergraduate and law degrees. She was an attorney in private practice until 2000 and was George W. Bush’s personal lawyer. In 1985, she became the first female president of the Dallas Bar Association and in 1992 became the first woman to head the Texas State Bar. She was also elected to one term as an at-large member on the Dallas City Council.

Confirm them is not thrilled. They are speechless and withholding their opinion for now. One there is done with President Bush.

David Frum says she is the ultimate loyalist.
Outside the Beltway wonders why Bush would pick someone so old.
Junkyardblog says it smacks of cronyism.
Volokh is a little pleased it breaks the mold.
Captains Quarters says she not only doesn’t look like the best candidate for the job, she doesn’t even look like the best female candidate for the job. He does however suggest she could be a stealth candidate.
The Glittering Eye still holds out hope in Bush’s trust on loyalty.
Ace of Spades updates that perhaps Karl Rove is a genius.
Sister Toldjah says hold on to your hats.
SCOTUS Blog says the President’s nomination creates a very interesting political dynamic - one that places the nomination in peril.
Michelle Malkin is utterly underwhelmed.
Underneath Their Robes points out how the picker became the picked.
Professor Bainbridge says Bush is now peeing on the movement.
Rightwing Nuthouse says it is an arrogant choice.
Initial reaction: Hope this isn’t a head fake leak, will have to study this more. Reaction around the usual conservative circles are not too happy. Some say she is not staunchly pro-life. One jokes at freerepublic that

At 8:15 am the President is going to announce he will officially switch to the Democrat Party.

My initial reaction…she sounds qualified for the job. I think there could have been a better pick. I’m not thrilled, but will have to do more study. It should satisfy some circles that hoped for another female on the court. One thing is for sure, it doesn’t matter who Bush has picked, I predict the donkeys to do their usual sky is falling dance. Did she donate to the Gore campaign? That is another rumor floating around. Take a look at this. With Frum claiming she is pro-life, and Planned Parenthood against her, this does give her some weight towards support. Keep in mind that Bush has known her loyalty for years, and knows a lot more about her than we do. I heard on FOX that Laura really urged the president to pick a female for the spot. I’m still studying.

All I see is around the blogosphere is doom and gloom. Many are hoping she is rejected by both sides in the hope that Bush will then nominate Janice Rogers Brown. I wouldn’t bank on that, and I want to ask Bush, what happened to all that political capital? However I do take comfort that the ACLJ supports this pick. I put a lot of stock in Jay Sekulow’s opinion, being that he is one of the most adament advesaries of the ACLU.

My conclusion: Despite the disappointment and what I consider overreaction to Bush’s pick, I am going to give Bush the benefit of the doubt. His judgement on most issues, other than the borders, has so far panned out good. I’m not jumping ship like some overreactors are suggesting. Despite what all these “pundits” are saying, the fact is none of them know how this woman will judge anymore than they know how Roberts would. We really don’t know enough, but Bush knows her for sure. The cronyism factor is what bothers us the most. Whether this candidate will get the confirmation is definitely up in the air now. We are sure to learn a lot more about her in the coming weeks to make a more solid opinion, and until then I might not start pushing petitions to support her, but I won’t be in the doom and gloom crowd either. Bush says she will be a strict interpreter of the Constitution, if thats true…thats all we can ask for. We’ll just have to wait and see. I am gonna go out on a limb here, and away from the herd, and give her my support. I don’t really care if she used to be a democrat or not. I listened to Rush talk to Cheney on this, and he said she believes in strict interpretation of the Constitution. That is what I want. So, until I see more, I’m gonna support the president’s decision on this. I think the whole jump ship stuff is an overreaction. I still think Bush could have made a better pick, but only time can tell us if this was a bad choice or not.

    IT’S MIERS

Another person picked who doesn’t have a strong proLife message or standing. Some say she does, but I haven’t seen proof of that in any of her statements.

We need to stop Planned Parenthood, the ACLU and other proDeath organizations from keeping abortion legal as birth control. Join us at http://www.marchtogether.com. Our voices will get louder every month until abortion on demand is over!

It shouldn’t matter who is in office. We know abortion is wrong and must end. Yes, vote for proLife representatives, but take the extra step and demand that they end abortion when they get into office!

    Harriet Miers!
I am catching hints of more cronyism…but I’m cautiously optimistic. In any case, don’t expect the leftists to show any civility just because she’s female.
